Advantage+ or manual campaigns: which one, and when
Meta's automated campaigns beat hand-built ones in some situations and lose badly in others. Here is how to tell which situation you are in.
Advantage+ shopping campaigns hand most of the decisions to Meta: audience, placements, budget allocation across creative, and how much of your spend goes to people who have already visited your site. Manual campaigns keep those decisions with you.
Neither is better in general. They are better at different things, and the difference comes down to one question: does Meta have enough data about your store to make good decisions on your behalf?
What Advantage+ actually automates
It is worth being precise, because the name suggests more magic than is there.
- Audience. You give a broad country-level input and optional audience “suggestions”; Meta decides who sees the ad.
- Existing-customer budget cap. You set the share of budget allowed to go to people already in your customer file. Everything else is treated as prospecting.
- Placement and creative allocation. Meta distributes spend across placements and across your uploaded ads dynamically.
- Creative variations. Optional automatic adjustments to your image and text.
What it does not automate: your margin, your offer, your product page, or the quality of your creative. Those remain the things that decide the outcome.
When Advantage+ wins
You have meaningful pixel history. This is the big one. The automation is a prediction system, and prediction needs data. A store with several months of purchase events and a few hundred conversions gives Meta something to work with. A store on day three does not.
You have a broad-appeal product. If a random sample of your country contains plenty of plausible buyers, letting Meta search that pool is usually better than your guess about which interests matter.
You have real creative variety. Advantage+ rewards having several genuinely different ads to allocate between. With one ad, there is nothing to allocate.
You are spending enough to feed it. The automation needs volume to learn. Below the learning threshold, it is doing the same guessing you would be, with less visibility.
When manual wins
You are starting from zero. With no pixel history, automation has no signal to optimise on, and you lose the one thing manual gives you: the ability to read what happened. Early campaigns are not really trying to be profitable — they are trying to answer questions, and a black box answers none of them.
Your product is genuinely niche. Specialist equipment, a narrow professional market, a regional product. Here your knowledge of who buys is better than Meta’s inference from a thin conversion history.
You need to control the prospecting/retargeting split precisely. Advantage+ blends them under one budget cap. If you want a hard separation — different creative, different frequency, different measurement — manual is the only way to get it.
You are in a Special Ad Category. Credit, employment, housing and social issues restrict targeting substantially, and the automation has less room to work with. The restrictions also change the campaign structure, so read the category rules before choosing either.
You are diagnosing a problem. When something breaks, you need to see which audience, which placement and which creative produced which result. Advantage+ reporting is deliberately coarser.
The practical answer for most Shopify stores
Run manual first, then move.
Months one and two: manual, broad targeting, one or two ad sets, three to five ads. The point is to accumulate pixel data and to learn which creative angle works — knowledge that transfers to whatever you run next.
Month three onwards, once you have a few hundred conversion events: run Advantage+ alongside the manual campaign, with separate budgets, and compare over at least two weeks. Do not replace, run in parallel. The comparison is the only reliable way to know which is better for your store, and the answer genuinely differs between stores in the same category.
Comparing them honestly
Two traps make the comparison meaningless if you fall into them.
Audience overlap. If both campaigns target the same country broadly, they bid against each other and both look worse than they are. Exclude your Advantage+ customer list from the manual prospecting set, and accept that some contamination remains.
Attribution double-counting. A purchase can be attributed to both campaigns under different touchpoints. Compare using your Shopify revenue over the whole period, not the sum of the two Ads Manager columns.
Give it two weeks minimum, judge on cost per purchase against your own break-even, and be prepared for the answer to change when your creative changes. Automation amplifies the quality of what you feed it — which is why the returns on better creative are higher under Advantage+, not lower.
AdPilot’s campaign generator builds the manual structure — ad sets, exclusions, optimisation event and several distinct ad angles — which is also the structure that gives Advantage+ something worth allocating between when you are ready to test it.
